8  考查所有格后面名词的省略

为使表达简洁或避免重复，当-’s所有格所修饰的名词在句子前面已经提到，并且省略后不影响意思的表达时，这个受所有格修饰的名词通常可以省略。如：

This is my house, and that is Tom’s. 这是我的房子，那是汤姆的房子。

注意，当要表示某人的住所、店铺、诊所等时，所有格后的名词通常被省略。如：

I’m going to the butcher’s. 我到肉铺去。

I’m staying at my aunt’s. 我住在我姑母家。

She made a trip to the doctor’s. 她到医生那里去了一趟。

You can buy it at the chemist’s. 这个你可以在药房里买到。

【考例】This is not my dictionary. It’s ________. She lent it to me this morning. (贵州安顺中考题)

A. my sister          B. my sisters         C. my sister’s        D. my sisters’

【分析】C。根据句中的she可知，空格处应填单数而不能用复数，故可排除B和D；再根据前文的my dictionary可知，空格后其实是省略了dictionary一词，故要选能修饰名词的所有格，即选C。

考点9  考查所有格的“共用”问题

关于名词的所有格考点，考生还要特别注意“共有某物”的所有格与“分别拥有某物”的所有格的区别：若是几个人共有某物，其所有格只能在最后一个名词后加’s。比较：

John’s and Susan’s desks  约翰和苏珊各自的书桌

John and Susan’s desks  约翰和苏珊共用的书桌

【考例】________mothers both work in the same hospital. (广东汕头)

【分析】C。由于空格后的名词mothers为复数，所以应该是指两个人各自的母亲，所以Tim和Peter均应用所有格，即选答案C。

考点10  考查固定搭配中名词的用法

英语有很多的固定搭配，其中所涉及的名词不可随便改用其他名词，那是意思相同的名词也不行。如：

英语习惯上说as busy as a bee（很忙），其中的名词bee不能换成horse, cow, dog, bird, fish, animal等。

英语习惯上说make faces（做鬼脸），其中的名词faces不能换成hands, arms, feet, heads, back等。

英语习惯上说mind one’s own business（不干涉别人的事），其中的名词business不能换成thing, duty, way, action等。

英语习惯上说have no choice but to do sth（不得不做某事），其中的名词choice不能换成chance, decision, reason等。

英语习惯上说make it a rule to do sth（使做某事成为习惯），其中的名词rule不能换成plan, wish, secret等。

英语习惯上说take care of（照顾，照料），其中的名词care不能换成place, part, seat, idea等。

【考例1】—Why do you get up so early in the morning, Tracy?

—I generally make it a ________ to be up by 7 to read English. (武汉中考题)

A. plan                  B. wish                  C. secret                D. rule

【分析】答案为D。make it a rule to do sth为英语惯用句型，意为“使做某事成为习惯”，又如：He makes it a rule to get up at six. 他通常在六点起床。She makes it a rule never to borrow money. 她无论如何也不向别人借钱。

【考例2】—Emma, who are you taking ________ of at home?

—My grandma, she got hurt in an accident. (湖北孝感市

A. place                B. part                    C. seat                   D. care

【分析】D。答语中的my grandma为省略句，完整形式为I’m taking care of my grandma at home，短语take care of意为“照顾”，其余几项没有这样的意思。
