7  误解tear与newspaper的可数性

tear和newspaper的可数性很容易弄错。有的同学想当然地认为“眼泪”即“泪水”，“水”不可数，“泪水”和“眼泪”也应该不可数。但事实上，tear(眼泪)却是一个可数名词。如：

A tear rolled down his cheek. 一滴泪珠沿著他的面颊流下来。

To their surprise, she burst into tears. 使他们惊讶的是她哭了起来。

同样地，有的人可能认为，news (消息)和 paper(纸)均为不可数名词，所以newspaper(报纸)也应是不可数名词。但事实上，newspaper(报纸)也是一个可数名词。如：

Will you get me a newspaper when you’re out? 你出去顺便给我捎一张报纸来，好吗?

The duties of a postman are to deliver letters and newspapers. 邮递员的任务就是投递信与报纸。

陷阱8  混淆fish和chicken的不同用法

fish表示“鱼”时，为可数名词；chicken表示“小鸡”时，也是可数名词。此时fish的复数通常仍用fish，而chicken的复数则为chickens。如：

They caught several fish. 他们捉到几条鱼。

She is feeding the chickens. 她在喂小鸡。

但是，当它们分别表示“鱼肉”和“鸡肉”时，则为不可数名词。如：

Do you like fried chicken? 你喜欢吃炸鸡肉吗?

Will you have a little more fish? 你要不要再吃点鱼?

陷阱9  混淆clothes与clothing的数

两者均可表示衣服的统称，但clothes是一个没有单数形式的复数名词（永远是复数），而clothing则是一个没有复数形式的单数名词（永远不可数）。如：

The clothes were frozen on the washing-line. 衣服在晾衣绳上冻住了。

Loose clothing gives you greater freedom of movement. 穿宽松的衣服就能活动自如。

比较而言，clothes的含义比较具体，而clothing的含义则比较抽象。如：

I changed my clothes. 我换了衣服。

Our clothing protects us against the cold. 我们的衣服可以御寒。

若不考虑其细微区别，两者常可换用。如：

He spent a lot of money on clothes [clothing]. 他花了许多钱买衣服。
