六、如何用英语表示约数

用英语表示约数时有以下方法值得注意：

1. 大于某数的表示法：可用 more than, over, or more等表示。如：

more than fifty people 五十多个人     

children of fourteen and over 十四岁和十四岁以上的少年

sixty students or more 六十或六十多个学生

2. 小于某数的表示法：可用less than, under, or less, up to, almost, nearly 等。如：

It cost me less than 10 pounds. 我买它没要上10英镑。

It’s nearly [almost] 10 o’clock. 快10点了。

We stayed for an hour or so. 我们停留了一个小时左右。

It will cost around (round, about) 100 dollars. 那大概要100美元。

Some 100 people attended the meeting. 大约100人参加了会议。

I read more or less forty pages last night. 我昨晚看了大约40页。

七、如何用英语表示加减乘除

1. 加法运算的表示：常用and, plus, add 等表示。如：

Seven and [plus] eight is [are, make(s)] fifteen. 7加8等于15。

If you add ten to eight, you get eighteen. 10加8等于18。

2. 减法运算的表示：通常用 minus, from, take away (from) 等表示。如：

Twelve minus two is [leaves, equals] ten. 12减10等于2。

5 from 20 leaves 15. 20减5余15。

If you take five from twelve, you’re left with seven. 12减去5得7。

If you take four away from ten, that leaves six. 10减去4得6。

3. 乘法运算的表示：通常用 times, multiply, multiplied by, twice 等表示。如：

2 and 3 multiply to make 6. 2和3相乘得6。

2 multiplied by 4 makes 8. 2乘以4得8。

Five times three is [equals] fifteen. 5乘以3等于15。

What is twice two? 2乘2是多少?

4. 除法运算的表示：通常用 divide, divided by, into 等表示。如：

Four into twelve is [makes] three. 12除以4等于3。

30 divided by 6 is [equals]月5. 30除以6等于5。

5 divides into 30 6 times. 用5除30等于6。

八、是1980s还是1980’s

两者都可以，均用于表示世纪中的年代，其前通常要用定冠词。如：

Investment in technology stocks exploded in the 1990s. 20世纪90年代对技术股的投资迅猛增长。

The band first came to the fore in the late 1990s. 这支乐队20世纪90年代末开始崭露头角。

She’s been around as a film director since the 1960’s. 从六十年代起，她就一直是个很活跃的电影导演。

Many black people emigrated to Britain in the 1950’s. 在二十世纪五十年代许多黑人移民到英国。

注：若用于名词前作定语，则根据所修饰的名词的意义来决定其前是否用冠词以及使用什么冠词（参见下面一条）。

九、如何用英语表示“一两个”

汉语说“一两个……”，说成英语是a…or two或one or two…，但不能说成 one…or two或a or two…。如“一两天”可说a day or two或one or two days，但不能说成 one day or two或a or two days。请看以下用例：

I’ll be able to finish it in a day or two. 在一两天内我会完成此事。

One or two days are enough to see the city. 要参观这个城市一两天就够了。

In a week or two I’ll be among the unemployed. 再过一两个星期我就要失业了。

I would like to use the computer for an hour or two. 我想用一两个小时的电脑。

十、如何用英语表示“一个半”

表示“一个半”可用a…and a half或one and a half… 如：

One and a half months have passed.. 已经过去了一个半月。

I finished the examination in an hour and a half. 我在一个半小时之内考试完毕。

The journey from London to Oxford takes about an hour and a half. 从伦敦到牛津大约需要一个半小时。

注意“两个半”“三个半”“四个半”等的表达。如：

The round trip was two dollars and a half. 来回票是两块半美金。

This happened four and a half centuries ago. 这是四个半世纪前发生的事。

十一、如何用英语表示“另外几个”

汉语的“另外几个”，说成英语可借助another, further, other, others, more 等词语，但要注意它们与数词搭配时的词序，如“另加两个星期”可说another two weeks, a further two weeks, two other weeks, two more weeks等。请看实例：

He has two other children. 他还有另外两个孩子。

Three others lay wounded. 另外三个人受伤躺在那里。

Two other boys made off through the trees. 另外两个小伙子从树林间逃跑了。

While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. 这时两个侦探把着门，另外两个打开包裹。
