用作名词，表示“眼泪”，其实是指“一滴眼泪”，所以是可数名词，不要认为“泪水”是“水”，不可数。如：
一滴眼泪沿着他的面颊流了下来。
正：A tear rolled down his cheek.
误：A drop of tear rolled down his cheek.
泪水模糊了她的眼睛。
正：Her eyes were dimmed with tears.
误：Her eyes were dimmed with tear.
◆technology
1. 表示“技术”，通常是不可数名词。如：
Modern life depends on good technology. 现代生活依赖优良的技术。
Computer technology is changing the world. 电脑技术正在改变世界。
2. 汉语说“科学技术”或“科技”，指的通常是“科学和技术”(science and technology)，而不是“科学的技术” ( scientific technology)。
3. 比较 technology 与 technique：后者指“技巧”、“技能”等。如：
Technique must be gained by practice. 技巧须通过实践获得。
You should improve your writing technique. 你应该要改进你的写作技巧。
◆telephone n. & v.
1. 用作名词，表示“电话”，在口语中可缩略为 phone。比较：
我通过电话告诉了他这个消息。
正：He told me the news by (tele)phone.
正：He told me the news on the (tele)phone.
正：He told me the news over the (tele)phone.
注：汉语说“接电话”，英语通常用动词 answer, 而不能按汉语意思用动词 receive。如：
If the (tele)phone rings, can you answer it? 如果有人来电话的话，请接一下好吗?
telephone 用作动词时的情形也一样。如：
I (tele)phoned in the afternoon but nobody answered. 我下午打了电话，但没有人接。
2. 用作动词，表示“打电话”，可用作及物动词或不及动词；若表示给某人打电话，可直接跟某人作宾语，也可以先接介词 to, 再跟宾语。如：
I’ll telephone (to) him. 我将给他打电话。
I’ll telephone (to) him to come. 我将打电话叫他来。
注：可接双宾语，表示打电话把某事告诉某人，若双宾语易位，用介词 to。如：
He telephoned me the news. /He telephoned the news to me. 他打电话告诉了我这条消息。
◆television n.
用作名词，表示“电视机”(＝television set)，是可数名词；若指“电视节日”，则是不可数名词，且一般不用冠词。如：
We bought our first television in 1978. 我们的第一部电视机是1978年买的。
The children watch far too much television. 孩子们看电视看得太多了。
I watched the game on television. 我在电视上看了比赛。
注：television 在口语中常可略作 TV 或 telly。
◆temperature n.
1. 汉语说“量体温”，英语习惯上用动词 take。如：
The nurse has just taken my temperature. 护士刚给我量过体温。
2. 有时可表示“发烧”(可数)。如：
He has [is running] a (high) temperature and has gone to bed. 他发高烧，已上床睡觉了。
