[06:30.32]had some pretty ignorant views on the subject of black people.
[06:36.51]But you know,when you're twelve years old,
[06:41.21]you're just starting to have your own opinions about things,
[06:46.52]and I knew this could be a very important moment in their education.
[06:53.13]I knew I could make a real difference,not only to little Roger,
[06:59.81]but to all the other kids,too,if I just handled it the right way.
[07:06.92]I decided I had to try to make Roger into someone special.
[07:13.11]Not like a teacher's pet--
[07:16.69]I wanted the other children to start seeing him as a human being,
[07:23.19]nor just a dark shape in the back of the room.
[07:28.18]So I went after him with questions in every class.
[07:33.88]He was a bright little boy,
[07:37.77]so it was easy enough for me to establish him
[07:43.18]as a smart person with real value.
[07:47.77]I was pretty pleased because I could see Roger becoming more confident,
[07:54.78]and although the other kids were still not very friendly,
[08:00.18]at least they stopped being so nasty to him.
[08:05.07]But you know what really changed everything?
[08:10.08]One day I could see Roger's mind was wondering,
[08:15.67]and without thinking I threw an eraser in his direction.
[08:22.18]I only meant to get his attention,
[08:26.28]but the eraser hit his hand and sent his pencil flying.
[08:32.08]The whole class roared! And afterwards,of course,
[08:37.07]all the kids went up to Roger to laugh with him about it.
[08:42.34]That's how he became an individual--someone special,
[08:47.93]to talk to and make friends with-
[08:52.04]and that's how I become "Dead-Eye Bean".
