[02:05.57]Part III Summary and Discussion 3.3 Discussion
[02:16.67]1.Listen to the following text- related passage
[02:22.89]carefully and find answers to the questions printed after it.
[02:28.98]When a teacher finds a way to make a real difference
[02:33.99]in the students' lives-that's what education is all about.
[02:40.47]Let me tell you a story.Back in 1944 we had a new student named Roger--
[02:49.95]he was the first black student in our school,
[02:54.86]and everyone was giving him a hard time.
[02:59.67]The other kids weren't bad children;
[03:04.06]they were just copying their parents,
[03:07.95]and well,I'm afraid most of their parents
[03:13.67]had some pretty ignorant views on the subject of black people.
[03:19.86]But you know ,when you were twelve years old,
[03:24.56]you're just starting to have your own opinions about things,
[03:29.87]and I knew this could be a very important moment in their education.
[03:36.66]I knew I could make a real difference, not only to little Roger,
[03:43.37]but to all the other kids, too,if I just handled it the right way.
[03:50.48]I decided I had to try to make Roger into someone special.
[03:56.56]Not like a teacher's pet--
[04:00.17]I wanted the other children to start seeing him as a human being,
[04:06.78]nor just a dark shape in the back of the room.
[04:11.87]So I went after him with questions in every class.
[04:17.46]He was a bright little boy,
[04:21.07]so it was easy enough for me to establish him
[04:26.48]as a smart person with real value.
[04:30.97]I was pretty pleased because I could see Roger becoming more confident,
[04:37.47]and although the other kids were still not very friendly,
[04:42.88]at least they stopped being so nasty to him.
[04:47.87]But you know what really changed everything?
[04:53.07]One day I could see Roger's mind was wondering,
[04:58.66]and without thinking I threw an eraser in his direction.
[05:05.16]I only meant to get his attention,
[05:09.16]but the eraser hit his hand and sent his pencil flying.
[05:14.96]The whole class roared! And afterwards of course,
[05:20.05]all the kids went up to Roger to laugh with him about it.
[05:25.36]That's how he became an individual-- someone special,
[05:30.95]to talk to and make friends with--
[05:34.94]and that's how I become "Dead-Eye Bean".
[05:40.43]When a teacher finds a way to make a real difference
[05:47.64]in the students' lives-that's what education is all about.
[05:54.22]Let me tell you a story.Back in 1944
[06:02.11]we had a new student named Roger--
[06:06.60]he was the first black student in our school,
[06:11.41]and everyone was giving him a hard time.
[06:16.32]The other kids weren't bad children;
[06:20.71]they were just copying their parents,
[06:24.71]and well,I'm afraid most of their parents
