[00:00.00]Lesson 6   Odds and Ends
[00:27.12]On these days, much of the profit of a business
[00:32.37]-- sometimes the whole of its success
[00:36.52]--depends on the use of the odds and ends.
[00:41.27]The odds and ends are various small things.
[00:46.03]They are left over when the main thing is produced.
[00:51.28]Yet they have a real value of their own.
[00:55.93]   All kinds of big businesses have their odds and ends.
[01:01.49]In a big meal factory, for example, there are countless odds and ends
[01:08.62]--bones and hair,to name only a few.
[01:13.90]The bones are made into glue;the hair is made into rope.
[01:19.96]If these odds and ends were to be looked down upon,
[01:25.13]it would mean a big difference in the amount of the profit of the factory.
[01:31.19]  We students have our own odds and ends.
[01:35.74]Take time for instance.
[01:39.58]Every one of us has the same amount of it.
[01:44.23]Our success or failure depends on the use of our time.
[01:49.87]But we use the time more or less in the same way.
[01:55.02]We have our regular day's work:
[01:58.78]certain perilds of classes,or several hours for review.
[02:05.26]And that ends a day.
[02:08.50]  But what about its odds and ends--the odd moments?
[02:13.67]Many giants in science or art
[02:17.93]have made huge successes for themselves in the world
[02:23.28]mainly because they have made best use of their odd moments.
[02:29.73]Take Tomas A.Edison.
[02:33.36]While he was earning his living by tapping out messages,
[02:38.69]he did not allow his odd moments to slip by.
[02:43.76]He thought,he planned,and he tried between messages.
[02:50.61]And he succeeded in working out a lot of things entirely new to the world.
[02:57.37]By fully using his odd moments,
[03:01.52]he provided valuable wealth for the modern world.
[03:06.80]  Think of the odd quarter of an hour in the morning before breakfast,
[03:12.55]the odd half an hour after dinner,
[03:16.52]and the odd moments in the washroom or between classes.
[03:21.98]Remember the chances to read or think
[03:26.42]that come now and again during the day.
[03:31.28]Make full use of them, and you my find,
[03:36.45]as many big businesses have found,
[03:40.81]that the real profit is in using the odds and ends.
