[00:27.30]  The last inch of space was filled,
[00:31.35]yet people kept on pushing themselves in along the walls of the store.
[00:37.28]Woman with small children
[00:40.93]and babies sat on chairs or upturned wooden boxes.
[00:46.52]And men leaned against the walls or on each other.
[00:51.17]We grew uneasy as the fight was coming to an end
[00:56.14]and it seemed that the fight would decide our fate.
[01:01.10]  The radio had been turned so loud that no one would miss a word.
[01:06.95]  "A left to the head and a right and another left.
[01:11.21]Carnera's backing away.
[01:14.68]Louis catches him with a short left to the jaw.

[01:22.60]Louis is saving that powerful right..."
[01:26.44]  A shout of joy in the store broke forth and sonn quieted down.
[01:32.40]  "...He's got Louis against the ropes
[01:36.05]and now it's a left to the body and a right.

[01:43.37]it looks like it was low...  Yes,ladies and gentlemen,
[01:48.04]the referee is warning him but he keeps raining the blows on Louis.
[01:54.29]It's another right to the body,and it looks like Louis's going down..."
[02:00.06]  "No!"The men in the store stood away from the walls and at attention.
[02:06.30]Women buried their faces in the hands.
[02:10.46]This might be the end of the word.
[02:14.53]If Joe Louis lost my race was beyond help.
[02:19.57]It would all be true that we were lower race,
[02:24.54]only a little higher than animals.
[02:28.51]True that God Himself hated us and forced us to be hewers of wood
[02:34.75]and drawers of water forever and ever.
[02:39.01]  We didn't breathe.We didn't hope.We waited.
[02:44.65]  "He's off the ropes,ladies and gentlemen.
[02:48.49]He's moving towards the center..."
[02:52.04]We listened with breathless attention.
[02:55.99]The worst might still happen.
[02:59.75]  "And now it looks like Joe is mad.
[03:04.01]He's caught Carnera with a left hook to the body and a right to the head.
[03:09.60]A left to the body and a left to the head.
[03:13.54]There's a left cross and a right to the head.
[03:17.80]Carnera's right eye is bleeding and he can't seem to keep up his block.
[03:22.97]Louis keeps raining the blows on him.
[03:26.73]The referee is moving in.
[03:30.18]Louis sends a left to the body and it's the uppercut to the jaw and Carnera is dropping.
[03:36.95]He's down,ladies and gentlemen..."
[03:40.89]Babies slid to the floor as women stood up and the men leaned toward the radio.
[03:46.95]"Here's the referee.He's counting.
[03:51.03]One,two,three,four,five,...
[03:58.39]Is Carnera trying to get up again...
[04:02.05]  All men and women in the store shouted,  "No!"
[04:06.73]"... eight,nine,ten.The fight is all over ,ladies and gentlemen.
[04:14.17]Let's get the mike over to the referee... Here he is.
[04:19.03]He's got the Brown Bomer's hand,he's holding it up...here he is...
[04:25.20]The winner,and still heavyweight champion of the world...Joe Louis."
[04:32.17]  Champion of the world.A black boy.
[04:36.53]Some black mother's son.He was the strongest man in the world.
[04:43.01]People in the store were wild with joy.
[04:47.37]We laughed and cheered,celebrating our victory over the white in the fight.
[04:53.54]It took an hour or more before the people left the store and headed for home.
[04:59.42]Those who lived too far made arrangements to stay in town.
[05:04.56]It wouldn't do for a black man and his family to be caught on a lonely country road
[05:11.04]on a night when Joe Louis had proved
[05:15.59]that we were the strongest people in the world.
