The Sri Lankan president has visited the site of a devastating landslide as local villagers dig through mud, in defiance of police orders.
The landslide struck a tea plantation east of Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, after heavy monsoon rains. The number of missing is unknown, but local officials say the death toll could easily exceed 200. A top disaster official said there was no chance of finding any more survivors.
Sri Lanka has experienced heavier-than-usual rains over the past few weeks, prompting many flood and mudslide warnings across the country.
