In movie news, the 22nd Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival kicked off in Wuhan earlier this week, and a number of classic films from a variety of styles are being showcased. Time to re-live some of the memorable moments in Chinese cinema.

A glimpse of Jet Li early in his career. Kung fu film ’The Shaolin Temple’ was released in 1982, and achieved a box office haul of 100 million RMB Yuan, even though a ticket back then was only 10 cents.

"I think the movie is a miracle, the actors we included had no prior experience in front of the camera. But they all did so well, and many are now big stars." Hsin-Yan Chang, director of “The Shaolin Temple” said.

Another hugely successful film is Zhang Yimou’s ’The Story of Qiu Ju’, which won the Golden Lion award at the 1992 Venice Film festival. It tells the story of a peasant woman seeking justice for her husband, who has been beaten by a village official. The film is known for the performance of Gong Li, who won the best actress award in Venice.

The oldest movie showcased is "The Three Smiles", a musical comedy released in 1964 in Hong Kong. The film tells a love story set in the Ming Dynasty. The beautiful scenery and music, and above all the marvellous performances of the actors, has left a deep impression on an entire generation of Chinese.

These are just some of the timeless works showcased at the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival. So make sure you don’t miss out on the fun.
