U.S. President Barack Obama has addressed students at the University of Cape Town during his visit to South Africa. He spoke of the "spirit" of former president Nelson Mandela, which he said could never be imprisoned.
"Mandela’s spirit can never be imprisoned. Because his legacy is here for all to see. It’s in this auditorium. Young people - black, white, Indian, everything in between - living and learning together in a South Africa that is free and at peace," Obama said.
Obama also called for more democracy across the African continent, noting that while much had been achieved, more was needed to be done to curb corruption and political violence.
Obama’s address comes nearly 50 years after former U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy delivered a famous speech at the same university. Kennedy’s speech, delivered soon after Mandela was sentenced to life in prison, called on young people to launch a fight against injustice.
Obama arrived in Cape Town on Sunday from Johannesburg. He'll leave South Africa on Monday and head to Tanzania.
