The thirteen female leads who are the heroines of the movie, as well as the lead actor Christian Bale, struck a pose at the premiere. Zhang Yimou says it was Steven Speilberg who recommend Bale for this role. And he was impressed by the actor's devotion to the role.

Zhang Yimou said, "First we talked via phone and he asked me if he should read something. I recommended him some novels in English. Then I met him at his home one day, the books were all opened on the table, so I knew he was reading all of them. I was quite moved. Actually at that time we were only in the phase of talking about the script, we hadn't signed contract yet. But he had already begun to do prepare."

But the focus of attention of the press went to Ni Ni, the "new generation of Mou's Lady", who performs as one of the thirteen heroines. With no prior acting experience, the anchoring major from the Communication University of China has won acclaim for her debut screen role.

Ni Ni said, "I haven't acted in any films or TV series. And I haven't learned acting either. I think to be an actor you have to be equipped with broad knowledge and vision, and a low-key and sensitive heart."

A joint effort by Zhang and hailed scriptwriters Yan Geling and Liu Heng, the 600 million yuan budget film got help from a CGI team in Hollywood. It has been selected as China's entry for Academy Award in the foreign film category. Zhang Yimou says although the film is set in a tragic chapter of the nation's history, the warmth and kindness of humanity reflected in the story are what motivated him to do the movie.
