Japan's tourism industry is suffering from the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, dealing a heavy blow to the national economy.

Two months after Japan's earthquake, the country's tourist industry is starting to feel the pain.

Visitors are staying away.

Government figures show the number of foreign tourists in March is only a fourth of what it was a year go. Figures released by Japan's central bank reflect similar worries.

Chinese tourists, who make up the second largest group, have lost their enthusiasm.

Chief representative, Beijing, Japan National Tourism Organization, said, "The number of tourists to Japan has stalled, including those from China, which has shown a sharp decrease following the earthquake. In March alone, the number of Chinese tourists only amounts to half of that of last year."

It's bad news for travel agents, too.

Liu Yan, manager of Beijing Branch, Bhina Travel Service Co., said, "We've seen many cancellations following the earthquake, even during the cherry blossom season. Starting from April, we haven't received any individual bookings."

In 2010, nearly one-and-a-half million Chinese visited Japan, accounting for one-fifth of the country's total tourists. But the number has fallen to almost zero since the earthquake.
