[10:38.25](W): Welcome everybody.
[10:40.33]And today I’d like to introduce you to my guest, Steven Slater,
[10:44.60]who is going to talk to us something about cycling tours.
[10:47.88]Steven, welcome.
[10:49.52](M): Thank you. And welcome everybody.
[10:51.82]W: So Steven, as a coach at the Sunshine Cycling Club,
[10:55.65]can you tell us something about preparing for a cycling tour?
[10:58.82]M: Well, for anyone who is considering going on a tour,
[11:02.43]the first thing to consider is safety.
[11:04.84]Because with the correct equipment,
[11:06.91]and good riding habits, cycling tours can be so much fun ,
[11:10.41]and indeed, very rewarding.
[11:12.82]W: So what should people consider first?
[11:15.11]M: It’s very important indeed to consider what you wear.
[11:18.40]Naturally, this is largely determined by the time of year
[11:21.79]and where it is you actually plan to travel to.
[11:24.52]So what I propose to give is a general guide.
[11:27.70]But whatever the weather, time of year or destination,
[11:31.41]a good quality helmet is essential.
[11:33.93]They are not expensive but have, in the past, saved many lives.
[11:38.52]But don’t try to cut corners by buying a secondhand helmet.
[11:41.58]They may look to be in perfect condition but you can never tell.
[11:45.31]Always invest in a new one.
[11:47.82]Any good bicycle shop can advise you on one that will suit your needs.
[11:51.65]So get advice from the shop.
[11:53.40]Tell them where you are going and why.
[11:55.70]W: I see. So firstly, a good helmet.
[11:58.87]Then, what about clothes?
[12:01.28]I often see cyclists wear special sportswear.
[12:05.32]Is that so?
[12:06.64]M: You can buy special sportswear for cycling tours.
[12:10.03]But what is more important is that it can be seen.
[12:13.19]W: It can be seen? I don’t understand well.
[12:17.46]M: Well, you should always be aware
[12:19.31]that cyclists are notoriously difficult to spot,
[12:22.37]and many accidents happen because motorists simply fail to see the cyclist.
[12:26.86]Therefore wear something that can easily be seen,
[12:30.25]something that stands out.
[12:31.56]Again, most good bicycle stores keep a supply of inexpensive,
[12:35.61]brightly colored vests.
[12:37.14]And if you are riding at night,
[12:39.11]do make sure you have lamps securely fitted to your bicycle both front and back,
[12:43.70]and check your bicycle lamps each day to make sure they work properly.
[12:47.97]In fact, it is always a good idea to carry a spare set of batteries for the purpose.
[12:53.43]But to be safer still it is often best to avoid riding at night.
[12:57.92]W: And Steven, how far would you advise someone to travel in one day?
[13:02.95]M: That depends on your level of personal fitness.
[13:06.24]What is important is not to try to ride too far, too quickly.
[13:10.06]Take your time, and if you feel tired, stop and rest.
[13:13.67]Remember that the joy of cycling tours is the ride itself,
[13:17.52]getting close to nature and seeing things
[13:20.03]you wouldn’t normally see if you were traveling by car or bus.
[13:23.42]Therefore, plan your journey in short stages.
[13:26.71]No more than ten or twenty miles per day.
[13:29.55]And if you are planning your journey in the summer,
[13:32.06]when it is likely to be hot, take plenty of water.
[13:35.45]W: How much water should cyclists take in case of hot weather?
[13:39.61]M: In fact, if it is a really hot day,
[13:43.33]like the sort of weather we had last summer,
[13:46.39]you are advised to drink at least one liter of water every hour.
[13:50.33]W: That is quite a lot of water.
[13:52.63]Are there any other things you have to prepare in summer?
[13:56.45]M: Well, you have to protect yourself against sunshine.
[14:00.06]Sun cream is essential in hot weather
[14:02.47]because you can very easily get sun burned without even realizing it.
[14:05.97]When you buy sun cream,
[14:07.93]make sure that it contains a high index of SPF and PA. SPF can resist UVB,
[14:14.61]which results in melanin.
[14:16.47]You know, the thing that will cause the blackening of your complexion.
[14:20.08]And PA can resist UVA, which results in wrinkles and slack skin.
[14:24.90]So the ideal sun cream used for cycling tours in summer
[14:29.15]should contain SPF30 and PA three plus.
[14:32.77]W: Oh, I see. Then how about insect repellent?
[14:37.36]M: It is also advisable.
[14:39.00]Spray some insect repellent on your arms and legs before setting off.
[14:43.48]And you needn’t worry too much about insects when you cycle.
[14:46.76]Actually some insects are harmful.
[14:49.06]So you’d better not be bitten or stung by them.
[14:51.91]W: Do you have any more general advice for your listeners?
[14:55.08]M: What I would say is, prepare for the worst.
[14:57.92]Always keep a puncture repair kit handy and, of course,
[15:01.42]don’t forget to take a basic tool kit.
[15:03.94]You can get all kinds of repair kits and tool kits at my club at a favorable price.
[15:09.19]After all, I’d like to say, ride safely.
[15:12.64]Use common sense.
[15:14.06]Respect other road users and adhere to the laws of the road.
[15:17.56]This is the best way to ensure your own safety.
[15:20.52]But also care for the environment.
[15:22.92]Don’t leave your rubbish lying around.
[15:25.01]Keep it with you and dispose of it in a rubbish bin whenever you get the chance.
[15:29.05]W: Well, we all should protect the environment, shouldn’t we?
[15:32.23]Steven, thank you very much for all the advice you gave us about cycling.
