教案:

Hi, welcome to Xiaoming Yingyu! Let’s start with our slang for today.

欢迎来到小明英语!让我们从俚语开始吧

OK. You all know the word “read”. It means to read some words, read a book.

你们都知道read这个单词吧,意思是阅读

But you can also understand what we call “body language”.

你也可以读懂肢体语言

If you can look at somebody and know that they are feeling sad, or maybe that they are happy,

如果你看到一个人并且能知道他们是否忧伤,开心,

or they are lying to you, or they forgot to do their homework again. That means you are reading that person.

或者他们在对你撒谎,或者他们又忘了写作业。意思就是你在读那个人

You are understanding what they mean. If you do this really well, you can say that you are reading a person like a book.

你可以读懂他们的意思。如果你很擅长,你可以说你可以像读一本书一样去读人

I have some friends who are really good at reading people, and some other friends who aren’t.

我有一些朋友很擅长读人,也有些朋友不擅长

That’s how you use that word in a sentence. There’s another slang phrase that says “read between the lines”.

你就可以这样把它用在句子里。另外一个俚语叫做read between the lines

When you read a book, you read line after line. But sometimes there’s a little bit more meaning to a book than what you read.

当你读书的时候,你会一行一行地读。但是有的时候读书也有更深一些的意思

A story about a young person moving to the city represents how life is full of opportunity. It’s not just about that person.

一个关于年轻人来到城市的故事讲述了生活里的很多机遇,不仅仅是关于那个年轻人

A friend might spend a lot of time talking about how this girl ignoring him,

一个朋友可能会总跟你说一个女生怎样忽视他

how he feels like she’s being so rude to him by not responding to his texts or ever spending time with him.

他感到她很粗鲁,因为她从来不回短信或在一起相处

And then he might say “Can’t you read between the lines? I really like her.”

然后他可能会说“你难道看不出来吗,我真的很喜欢她”

In this case, your friend is asking you to understand the bigger meaning, not just exactly what he tells you.

在这里,你的朋友想让你去明白真正的含义,不仅仅是他告诉你的内容

Or another case, if your dad is telling you to get better grades,

或者,如果你爸爸告诉你要考高分

he’s trying to tell you between the lines that he cares about you and wants you to work harder so that you can have a better future.

他其实是在告诉你他很关心你,想让你好好努力,有一个更好的未来

That’s our slang for today, now let’s talk about sentence structure.

这就是我们今天的俚语,现在我们来讲句型

Here’s our first example: “There are differences in the amount of time required to complete reading this book.”

我们第一个例子是需要读完这本书的时间因人而异

“There are differences in the amount (or number) of A required for B.

完成B所需要的A的数量因人而异

Another example is “There are differences in the amount of money required to buy a car.”

另外一个例子是需要买一辆车的钱因人而异

You might need a lot of money, you might not need very much.

你可能需要很多钱,也可能不需要很多

There are differences in how much you need of A, money, to do B, buy a car.

你需要的A,钱,去做B,买车,是因人而异的

One last example for you: “There are differences in the number of hotdogs required by a person to be full.”

最后一个例子是每个人吃热狗的数量因人而异

I don’t need many hotdogs to be full, but my friend sometimes can eat a lot.

我不需要吃很多热狗就可以吃饱,但是我的朋友有时候会吃很多

So there are differences in how many hotdogs you need to be full. Let’s talk about etymology.

所以吃多少个热狗因人而异。我们来说说词源吧

Our root word for today is glut, or gluten. In Latin, this means glue, or sticky substance.

我们今天的词根是glut或者gluten。在拉丁语里,它的意思是胶水,或者粘的物质

Which of course glu kind of sounds like glue, right? So that’s the obvious one. That’s the one you can tell right away this root is used for.

Glu听上去像glue吧?这个很明显。你可以立刻就直到这个词根在这里的用途

But there are a couple of other words that’s also used for. You might hear a lot, especially if you like cooking.

不过也有另外两个单词用这个词根。如果你喜欢做饭,那你可能经常听说下面这个词。

Gluten is the part of wheat that has a lot of protein, and it’s what makes dough sticky.

Gluten(面筋)是小麦富有蛋白质的部分,这也是为什么面团会很粘

So you hear glue for gluten, the sticky part of wheat. Glue is also used in glutinous, which means gummy, chewy, sticky.

所以你听到了glue,就像在gluten里,小麦粘的那部分。Glue在glutinous里也用到了,意思是粘性的

In English,糯米is called glutinous rice because it’s sticky. And if you are glutinating something, you are sticking them together.

英语里,糯米叫做glutinous rice。如果你在glutinate某物,你在把它们粘在一起

If you glutinate two things, you are putting glue and you are putting something else on top and you can’t pull them apart.

如果你在glutinate两个物体,可以用胶水把其中一个粘在另外一个上面,你无法把它们分开

So if you see glu at the beginning of a word, you have a pretty good chance of guessing correctly that it means to stick something to something else.

如果你看到了一个单词以glu开始,那么它很有可能是和粘让某物相关的

Thank you so much for joining us today. I hope you learned something.
