教案:

Hello, welcome to the class today

For today’s slang, we will be talking about "all-nighters" and "one night stands."

Okay, I know, they sound really similar. They both have the word "night" in them

BUT you do not want to get them confused because they have very different meanings

Let’s talk about one first: all-nighters

"All-nighters" can be used like this: I am going to pull an all-nighter because I have so much homework

I definitely can’t get any sleep tonight

To "pull" an all-nighter means you are planning on staying up all night

The term "one night stand" on the other hand, refers to…well…sleeping with someone

And never seeing them again

For example, if you were at a bar, and you met someone nice

and thought looked pretty good, then slept with them, and never saw them again

you just had a one night stand with this person

So if someone asks you what you did over the weekend, make sure you have the two words separate

To pull an "all-nighter" means to stay up all night

To have a "one night stand" is to sleep with somebody

Those two phrases of slang sound very similar, but because their meanings are so different

you don’t want to get them confused

Let’s talk about our sentence structure for today

Here’s our example: Playing video games, though great for fun, can be bad if you play too often

So the structure of the sentence is "A, though B, has this effect (C)."

And B and C are usually kind of….juxtaposed. They’re opposites. They don’t

mean the same thing

C will probably surprise you after hearing B

Our last example is : carrots, though you may not like them, are very good for

you

Okay? So remember that sentence structure – it will come back

Let me give you a tip for how to learn English more effectively

I know a lot of you are practicing reading English. Reading is a very important part of learning a language

And usually, you’ll want to pick up a book by a classic author

like Hemingway, Shakespeare, or all sorts of other authors you hear people talking about

However, though these books are very educational

they can be very confusing, because of the Old English that is used

Recognize that sentence structure?
