偏斜修饰语

一般说来，修饰语在句中的位置不同，有时会导致语意的变化。比较：

Only I kissed her last night. 昨晚只有我吻了她（即别人没吻她）。

I only kissed her last night. 昨晚只是吻了她（即没干别的事）。

I kissed only her last night. 昨晚我吻的只有她（即没吻过别人）。

I kissed her only last night [last night only]. 我只是在昨晚才吻了她（即其他时候未吻过她）。

偏斜修饰语（squinting modifier），也叫歧义修饰语，它是一种因在句中位置不当而导致语意歧义的修饰语。如：

I have followed the advice sincerely given by the teacher.

The woman scolded the boy for playing with fire bitterly.

第一句中，sincerely 就是“偏斜修饰语”，因为它在句中的位置不当，结果让人感觉 sincerely 既可理解为修饰follow, 也可理解为修饰given。

第二句中，从句意来看，bitterly 应该是修饰 scolded 的，但在句中却好像是在修饰playing，从而产生了歧义。

上述两句若作以下调整，则句意明确：

I have sincerely followed the advice given by the teacher.

The woman bitterly scolded the boy for playing with matches.
