易错词except重要用法详解

1. 表示“除……外”，即将其后所接的内容排除在外。如：

Nobody was late except her. 除她之外没有人迟到。

She eats everything except fish. 她什么都吃，但不包括鱼。

2. 后接动词时，通常不用动名词不用不定式。该不定式有时带to，有时不带to，情形比较复杂，大致原则是：若其前有do，不定式不带to；其前没有do，不定式通常带to。如：

It had no effect except to make him angry. 除惹他生气外，没产生任何效果。

I could do nothing except agree. 我除了同意，没有别的办法。

4. 比较 except 与 except for：前者主要用来谈论同类的东西；后者主要用来谈论不同类的东西，在说明情况后作细节上的修正，有时含有惋惜之意。如：

We had a pleasant time, except for the weather. 我们玩得很高兴，只是天气不太好。

The meal was excellent except for the first course. 这顿饭好极了，只是第一道菜稍差。

但是，要注意以下两种情况：

(1) 用于all, every, no, everything, anybody, nobody, nowhere, whole 等表示概括性的词语后面时，两者可互换。如：

He ate the whole meal, except (for) the beans. 除了豆以外，他把饭菜都吃了。

We shall all take part in the sports except (for) Jim. 除吉姆外，我们都将参加比赛。

You couldn’t hear anything except (for) the noise of Louise typing. 除了路易丝打字的声音外，你什么也听不到。

但是下面一句要用 except for，因为其前没有上面提到的概括性的词语：

The house was quiet except for the noise of Louise typing. 除了路易丝打字的声音外，房里安安静静的。

(2) 用于句首时，习惯上要用except for，不用except；但此时except for表示except的意思，如：

Except for James, we have told everyone the news. 我们已把这个消息告诉了大家，只有詹姆斯没有告诉。

Except for a slight cold, I am quite well now. 就是受了一点凉，要不，我的身体倒挺棒。

5. 比较 except for与but for：前者主要表示例外，而后者主要表示一种虚拟条件（与虚拟语气连用）。如：

Except for me, everyone passed the exam. 除了我之外，大家都通过了考试。

But for my help, she would not have passed the exam. 若不是我的帮助, 她就不会通过考试。

按传统语法，except for不用于虚拟语气，但在现代英语中有时也可以用于虚拟语气。如：

Except for John, they all died. 除约翰外，他们都死了。

Except for John, they would all have died. 要不是因为约翰，他们就都会死了。
