indicate, imply, suggest, signify的区别 

indicate, imply, suggest, signify它们都用于文字或符号所表达的约定概念或事物，都含“意指”的意思。

一、suggest

suggest 指“符号或语言等所暗含的意思”。例如：

He claims to mean one thing, but his choice of words suggests quite another. 他自称所说的是一个意思，但他的字里行间却暗含另外的意思。

二、indicate

indicate侧重指“字面上的大致意思”，而imply则侧重指“符号或文字中未明确说明的、可联想到的含义”。如：

The arrow on a sign indicates the way to go. 标志牌上的箭头表示道路的去向。

Blushing implies shyness. 脸红意味着害羞。

What do you imply by that statement? 你那样说暗指什么？

三、imply

imply与suggest相比，前者着重于联想的“细微”或“复杂”，后者侧重于意思上的“含糊”或“不明确”。例如：

The mystery plots imply that anyone could be guilty of the crime. 神秘的情节暗示案中的任何人都可能有罪。

The mystery plots suggest to the unwary reader a bewildering array of false leads. 神秘的情节向粗心的读者暗示了一连串的疑团。

四、signify

signify通过某种行为“表示、表明”。例如：

A white flag signifies surrender. 白旗表示投降。

The jury signifies its decision with a show of hands. 陪审团通过句首来表决。
