[00:-1.00]You're taking a science test and are unsure of an answer.
[00:-2.00]While the teacher is busy,
[00:-3.00]you notice you can see the test answers of the student next to you.
[00:-4.00]Would you look closer?
[00:-5.00]Are you a cheater?
[00:-6.00]More than half the kids in a national survey are.
[00:-7.00]The "1998 Report Card on the Ethics of American Youth"
[00:-8.00]found that 7 out of every 10 high school kids have cheated on a test at least once.
[00:-9.00]Including all grades, the number is more than 6 out of 10.
[00:10.00]And reports of cheating are increasing.
[00:11.00]There's intense pressure for kids to succeed.
[00:12.00]Sometimes they feel they have to—at any cost.
[00:13.00]Parents,teachers,
[00:14.00]even friends can put a lot of pressure on students to get good grades.
[00:15.00]Some parents threaten to punish for bad grades or offer rewards for good marks.
[00:16.00]Most students think about cheating at some time.
[00:17.00]It could be copying someone else's answers;
[00:18.00]it could even be giving answers to somebody else.
[00:19.00]"If they're doing really badly in a subject,
[00:20.00]that makes kids want to cheat so they can get a better grade,"
[00:21.00]says first Class Scout Ben Patrick,11,from Troop 69,Palatine,Illinois.
[00:22.00]David Kimwell,16,of Provo,Utah,agrees,
[00:23.00]"Kids are driven to cheat when there is pressure to succeed."
[00:24.00]But these kids also know
[00:25.00]that succeeding on a test by cheating is not really succeeding at all.
[00:26.00]When students cheat, they are less likely to really understand their schoolwork.
[00:27.00]And when you don't understand your schoolwork,
[00:28.00]your grades will probably suffer;cheating can only get you so far.
[00:29.00]The bottom line is: If you don't really learn it now,
[00:30.00]you'll probably have to learn it later!
[00:31.00]Here's how not to cheat:
[00:32.00]Talk to your parents.
[00:33.00]Think about the kinds of pressures they might be putting on you.
[00:34.00]Sometimes parents think rewarding or punishing will encourage kids to work harder,
[00:35.00]but often they don't encourage at all.
[00:36.00]Let your parents know how you feel,
[00:37.00]and let them know how they can reduce school stress for you,
[00:38.00]while still encouraging good grades.
[00:39.00]Change your study habits.
[00:40.00]Have you sometimes felt the urge to cheat
[00:41.00]when you didn't study well enough for a test?
[00:42.00]Try changing your study habits.
[00:43.00]study with a friend or have your parents help.
[00:44.00]Do not force all your studying into the last minute,
[00:45.00]and get a good night's sleep before a test.
[00:46.00]Finally,make practice tests
[00:47.00]so you can focus on those areas in which you need the most work.
[00:48.00]Talk to your friends.
[00:49.00]If you feel stress to get good grades—and maybe cheat
[00:50.00]—because your friends get better grades, talk to them.
[00:51.00]Ask how they prepare for tests and suggest studying in a group.
[00:52.00]You might get some ideas from them.
[00:53.00]An honest C will get you much further than a not-so-honest A.
[00:54.00]Face it: Cheaters never succeed— and pay a high price when caught.
[00:55.00]Whether you're a junior school student or a young adult at college,
[00:56.00]get caught cheating and you'll pay the price
[00:57.00]—usually a very high one.
[00:58.00]Here's how schools handle cheaters:
[00:59.00]For junior school students:
[-1:00.00]a strict talk with the student and a call to the parents.
[-1:-1.00]Repeat cheaters are removed from in-school activities.
[-1:-2.00]For middle school students:
[-1:-3.00]a zero or no grade on the assignment or the test on which the student cheated.
[-1:-4.00]Students may be removed from in-school activities,
[-1:-5.00]and parents will be told.
[-1:-6.00]For university students,like those in Harvard,Cambridge,or Massachusetts:
[-1:-7.00]cheaters are normally required to leave for two back-to-back terms.
