[00:-3.00]Good morning.I'm Jake Seltzer,and this is "Hello America.
[00:-4.00]"Today,Stamford is a city of big office buildings.
[00:-5.00]It didn't use to be.Fifty years ago.it was a city of factories...
[00:-6.00]At the Stamford Museum,
[00:-7.00]we looked at all the products that Stamford factories used to make.
[00:-8.00]Now Jake is going to tell us about these products.
[00:-9.00]Write down the names of the companies and their products.
[00:10.00]Of course the biggest company in Stamford was Yale & Towne.
[00:11.00]They used employ four out of five people in this town
[00:12.00]and could produce millions of locks a year.
[00:13.00]But there were many other compaies.like Machlett Laboratories,
[00:14.00]who used to make most of the world's glass tubes.
[00:15.00]Did you know that Stamford used to have two piano companies?
[00:16.00]Not one,but twoKroeger was one(my grandmother used to have a living room),
[00:17.00]and the other was...let me see.Oh,yes.Davenport.Davenport made a terrific piano.
[00:18.00]Both aren't in business anymore.
[00:19.00]Fifty years ago.you could buy shoes made right here in Stamford.
[00:20.00]T.B.Smart used to be an important company.
[00:21.00]Unfortunately,they aren't in business anymore.
[00:22.00]But one company that's still in business is Schick,the electric razor company
[00:23.00]It's not in Stamford anymore.but it began in Stamford.
[00:24.00]In fact,it was Jacob Schick who invented the electric razor.
[00:25.00]Good,Now let's see how many products you can remember that used to be made in Stamford.
[00:26.00]I say,"Pianos"And you say...Yes,They used to make pianos there.
[00:27.00]I say,"How about computers?Did they use to make them in Stamford?"
[00:28.00]And you say...No.They didn't use to make computers there.
[00:29.00]All right,Here we go.Pianos.Yes,They used to make pianos there.
[00:30.00]How about computers?Did they use to make them in Stammford?
[00:31.00]No.They didn't use to make computers there.TVs?
[00:32.00]No.They didn't use to make TVs there.
[00:33.00]What about electric razors?Yes,They used to make electric razors there.
[00:34.00]And shoes.Did they ever make shoes inStamford?
[00:35.00]Yes.They used to make shoes there.
[00:36.00]How about electric guitars?Did they use to make them?
[00:37.00]No.They didn't use to make electirc guitars there.
[00:38.00]And locks?Did they ever make locks in Stamford?
[00:39.00]Yes,they used to make locks here.
[00:40.00]Well,life in Stamford has changed a lot in the last fifty years.
[00:41.00]But then,life is different everywhere,isn't it?
[00:42.00]In your town,I bet things aren't the same as they used to be fifty years ago.
[00:43.00]There are things people can do now that they couldn't do then.
[00:44.00]And I'm sure there are things people could do then that they can't do now,
[00:45.00]I'm going to aks you some questions abuot what people could
[00:46.00]or couldn't do in your town fifty years ago.
[00:47.00]I say."Could they watch the news on TV fifty years ago?"
[00:48.00]And you answer...Yes.they could.Or...No.they couldn't.Or...
[00:49.00]Maybe they could;maybe they couldn't.I don't know.
[00:50.00]The answer depends on what's true for you.
